Favourite skin care essentials to help fade dark spots, address anti-aging concerns and create an even complexion.
I admit it. I have on occasion committed the cardinal skin sin; picking a pimple! Specifically for woman of colour, since our skin scars easily and we’re often left with hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), it’s extremely important not to poke or prod our skin. The result is usually hard to remove dark spots. However, no matter what your skin tone is, there are a few skin care essentials that I’ve found to be extremely helpful with reducing hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and creating an overall even complexion.
1. Rosehip Oil: I LOVE Rosehip oil! I’ve bought many brands over the years but I particularly love the Kosmea brand. Renowned for it’s skin healing properties, rosehip oil is high in vitamin A, C, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids. It is the natural skin care all star for helping to reduce hyperpigmentation (hello acne scars!), wrinkles and uv damage. With dedicated use, it gently fades dark spots. Like all good things rosehip oil takes time to see results, but be patient because I promise it works. I smooth a few drops over my face every night under my moisturizer. *Be sure not to confuse this with rose oil. Rosehip oil and rose oil are completely different.
2. Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid 10% Toning Complex: This toner uses glycolic and lactic acid to gently exfoliate the skin. This product helps to brighten skin, reduce fine lines, wrinkles and smooth out skin texture. I apply this in the evening and I’m always amazed at how much brighter my skin looks in the morning. My skin borders on sensitive and I haven’t had any adverse reactions to this product. I use this every 3 nights or so, alternating with natural toners such as rose or lavender water.
3. Alpha Hydrox AHA Souffle: I cannot live without this cream! Alpha hydroxy acids gently exfoliate the skin to reveal a fresher complexion. I’ve used this on and off for years and I always see an immediate difference in my skin. My complexion is brighter, clearer and smoother.
Remember to use sunscreen when using any exfoliant. All it takes is a short amount of time in the sun, unprotected, to reverse any positive skin improvements. If you have any recommendations for excellent all natural anti-aging products, I’d love to hear about them. I’m on the hunt for natural products that work as well as non-natural options.
Hopefully sweet spring days are just around the corner. Wishing you warm sunshine and a happy start to March!
